I Love Hell's Kitchen too. Gordon Ramsay is like the Simon Cowell of the cooking world LOL. I also liked that other show he did where he went into restaurants that were not making a profit and re-vamped the menu and what not, gave them a specialty dish and helped them turn the restaurant around. I can't remember what it was called though. I can watch Hell's Kitchen because, since it's on FOX I know it won't conflict with American Idol!
Hi! Yes, isn't he super? I think that show is called "Kitchen Nightmares" -- it's been here and on BBC, too. I'm really looking forward to this show!!!
Yay! I loved Kitchen Nightmares! He's delicious, even if he sounds like he's in the locker room. It's on Fox? I'll look for it!
locker room -- lol -- yes!
Fox- right -- it'll be so cool to have that show back.......!

Kinda. I'm not sure it's a really fair comparison, though.

Through that gruff exterior, I can tell Ramsay cares. Really cares. He cares about the success of the chefs and the restaurants he works with. He cares about the causes he fights for.

I get absolutely no such vibe from Cowell. Ever. Yes, I know that image is cultivated, and that he and Paula Abdul especially are playing roles that are not necessarily their real selves, but I don't feel any warmness from him.

You probably gathered I'm not a fan of American/Music/Pop Idol. It's not unlike shows of the past, such as Ed McMahon's "Star Search", but I find the reality TV gloss disgusting. They vamp the drama, and I don't care for that.

That second photo looks strangely Photoshopped.

But Cimmy and I have enjoyed the shows. I'm not much for reality TV, but... I like him. As I was saying, I can tell that he genuinely cares.
I've stil never seen an episode of American Idol -- or Big Brother or Survivor or most of the others. I enjoy a couple of the cooking ones and Project Runway because it's fun to see the work they produce. The competition part is something I don't like at all.

Gordon Ramsay is a cool guy -- I've learned that he does work for battered spouses, I think -- not certain exactly what; I should check. But he does seem to really really care about what he's doing. I didn't fully realize that until I saw his show The F Word -- wow.

Oh! I scooped it from Google Images -- and then plunked it down here. But you're probably right.
Well I totally disagree with you and anyone with extended exposure to Simon Cowell will agree with me that he absolutely cares about the contestants but he also tells the truth as he sees it. Most contestants and fans of the show appreciate his honesty and his knack for getting it spot on right most of the time. American Idol was actually born from Pop Idol which was born in Britain by Simon Cowell. Now every country on the planet has their own 'Idol' competition (I heard on the news recently that Iran is about to crown their first Idol with a grand prize of $5000.00) Wow! American Idol is absolutely nothing like the old Star Search program. If you had ever watched it you would know that. There is no comparison between the two. Actually there is no comparison between American Idol and any other reality television program in terms of viewership, ratings and contestants success post-Idol. But for all of you Idol haters there's only 2 more seasons after 2008 because Simon is pulling the plug after 2010. Then the shows will re-air on American Idol Rewind for the next 10 years (feel free to NOT watch, there will be plenty of people watching enough to keep it on the air).
Just for the record -- I've never seen the show, so I don't hate it. I don't even know it. I just have no interest in watching performances (I don't watch the dancing ones either). Mostly I watch mysteries and several dramas. Some comedies.

Yes, I know. I've seen clips of him on the panel of judges.

You misunderstand. My point was that programs vaguely similar to this HAVE existed. Yes, it's got a very decided reality TV bent. My definition of reality TV: TV turned on its head-- celebrities pretend to be average Joes, and average Joes pretend to be celebrities. Stop. Stop right now, yes, of course, "Idol" differs as average Joes DO get to become celebrities... after a fashion.

TV shows have a formula. Reality TV is serving up those same formulas, but just flip-flop it as I described.

Don't insult me. I am not going to speak to things I have not researched somewhat, and so you don't need to be on the defensive.

I have seen a few clips of Pop Idol. I have seen a bit of its imports around the world, and I have seen a little bit of American Idol. BACK OFF.
Thought I'd better check out American Idol, since it was mentioned here -- watched some last night. Although I don't have a lot of interest in watching the performances, I did find that the people were talented and certainly compelling to watch. I can understand why it would be a popular show.

They do try very hard; it must be very exciting to have that opportunity!
